I attempt to "tear it up" as they say

So remember that time we performed at WAXworks? Yeah, it wasn’t that long ago.  We’re still waiting on the video to post for you, but in the meantime, we thought we’d share some of the feedback that we got with you.

In terms of how it felt internally – i was really excited by how the showing went.  To start with, it was jam packed full, standing room only (we actually couldn’t watch the other pieces because we couldn’t fit in the theater!) which felt GREAT.  Even better was that it was a mix of tried-and-true fans (it’s really incredible to us that some of you are there every time – it means so much to us, and we hope you’re getting excited about the connections and evolution that you’re seeing!) and new audience members who were brought by friends, finally got around to coming to see us, or came with someone else but enjoyed seeing our work! If you’re one of those new people who’s since found your way here – WELCOME to the family!

In terms of the actual performance, I felt pretty snazzy as well.  I was terrified leading up to it (first time dancing in my own work in NYC, first solo in NYC, first real solo ever) but once i was on stage i really felt pretty calm and like i was owning it (we’ll see if that’s how it really looked when we get the video…).  I thought it was Cristina’s best run of the song that i’d ever heard, and it seemed to wow people (how could it not!) as much as it had wowed me when i’d first heard her.  The showing also clarified some things for me: littler things about where this arm should be when, how many times to repeat something, but also bigger things like what worked and what didn’t, what was funny and what was gross, and how much time each thing needed to become the next.

There’s still a ways to go, and decisions to be made, but that’s why i’m excited to take the AOMC to DC in a week! We’ll be performing with our original parent company, CrossCurrents Dance Company at Dance Place, and we couldn’t be happier to be back in action with them.  We’ll be showing this segment (here/take it feel good) as well as the chunk that we showed for Movement Research’s Open Perform (toss off the night covers/slow lift evolving).  If you’re in the DC/MD/VA area, or have friends and family that reside there, we’d LOVE to have you/them at the show – please help us spread the word and pack the theater!

One of my favorite parts about performing in DC (okay, aside from reuniting with CCDC’s artistic director, my dance-mom Debby Kanter) is that it’s such a different scene, aesthetic, and logic from NY, so work always reads much differently.  The different read always helps to shed light on what we’re doing and inform our choices.  Okay, okay.  And it’s totally fun to be the uber-edgy nyc pomo company that “doesn’t care” about rules, as someone put it the last time we were there.

Regardless, here are some of our picks of the audience generated ‘press quotes’ from the showing.  We’ll post video for you once we have it, but in the meantime, please tell your DC friends not to miss out! They can get their tickets here, and we’ll see them on Feb 6th and 7th!
